Three-quarters of Detroit area CIOs plan to hire IT professionals in the fourth quarter of 2013, and 10 percent plan to expand their teams, according to an IT hiring survey from California-based Robert Half Technology.
Seventy-four percent of CIOs surveyed for Robert Half’s IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report plan to hire, which is up 3 percentage points from last quarter’s survey.
But 69 percent of the Detroit area CIOs surveyed said they have difficulty finding enough skilled IT talent. The areas where it is hardest to find talent include networking, security and help desk and technical support. The numbers mirrored national statistics.
The majority of the expected hires come from companies that need to fill open IT positions, said Karen Wilson, Robert Half Technology Detroit office branch manager. The area has many open IT positions due to mergers and acquisitions, Wilson said. Many of the positions are also temp-to-hire, she said, meaning people are initially brought on for a temporary trial period before permanent hiring decisions on made. Areas seeing the most hires include health care, financial services, manufacturing and the home and mortgage industry.
The survey also found 87 percent of Detroit CIOs were confident their companies will grow in the fourth quarter and 64 percent were confident in their firms’ fourth-quarter investments in IT projects.
The survey is based on interviews with 200 CIOs from a random sample of Detroit area companies with 100 or more employees, said Jamie Carpen, Robert Half Technology senior district public relations manager. The survey was developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research firm, she said.
